Over two decades of\u00a0investigation by the National Institute of Mental Health demonstrated that IPT compares favorably to Cognitive Therapy (CT) and Cognitive Behavoral Therapy (CBT). Freed from the constraints of a research protocol we integrate certain CBT tools with our Interpersonal orientation. We believe our innovative integration provides clients with an enhanced IPT. While guided by research including that of IPT our work in the everday world is always relationship\u00a0rather than\u00a0manual\u00a0driven<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>IPT is more social role based than traditional intrapsychically oriented psychotherapy.\u00a0Though \u00a0attending to past life experiences, IPT is anchored in the present.\u00a0Identifying whether a problem is primarily related to conflict, to bereavement, or to transition helps focus the interpersonal work. By Identifying the primary relationship\u00a0at any given time in therapy\u00a0IPT emphasizes the export of therapy to current role functioning.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth problem area used in IPT relates to Interpersonal\u00a0Skills. Rather than regarding\u00a0Skills as a separate problem area we\u00a0incorporate skills into all levels of our work. Here we integrate\u00a0Mindfulness Based Skills (MBS) to strengthen role\u00a0functioning and interpersonal effectivenss. Some clients will have a more\u00a0intense skills approach than others.\u00a0For them, adjunctive\u00a0Dialectical\u00a0Behavioral Skills(DBTS) training is available. DBTS is a\u00a0detailed program developed by Marsha Linehan.<\/p>\n<p>Group by\u00a0Design has been\u00a0integrating IPT and DBTS\u00a0since its pilot\u00a0DBTS workshops in 1997. Daniel Even&#8217;s academic interest in integrating\u00a0IPT\u00a0with the\u00a0Buddhist roots of\u00a0Mindfulness began in his undergraduate studies.\u00a0His 1972 graduate thesis, <u>Identity, Idolatry, and Emptiness<\/u>, explored similarities in the thinking of Harry Stack Sullivan, one of the founders of IPT, and that of Madhyamica Buddism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unknown to many, even experienced psychotherapists, Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is one of the most research validated approaches available.
